Mexican Amigos

01

I went to Mexican Amigos, a tequila/sports bar and restaurant in Richmond Hill, for dinner with my family on Friday night. Located on Yonge and Elgin Mills, I pass by this place often during my commute to and from school. It was fairly busy with a chill and cozy atmosphere. There was a basketball game playing on the large screen TVs and I imagine if there was a hockey game the place would be much more packed and rowdy. Almost every booth also has its own TV which is cool. Friday and Saturday nights are “Latin Nights!” and we were entertained by some great live music.

The food isn’t really authentic Mexican, but none of us were expecting that from anywhere in this area. We still really enjoyed our meals! Our server, while a little forgetful, was friendly and pretty good considering how busy it started to get.

04

WARM BLANKET
St-Rémy à la Crème, Amaretto, crème de cacao, milk
$6.95

I think this is the first hot alcoholic beverage I’ve ever had! It’s a nice drink, but it didn’t particularly fit well with the food and mood of the evening.

02

AMIGOS NACHOS (large)
crispy corn tortilla chips layered with refried black or pinto beans, shredded cheese, mexican tomato sauce, baked, topped with pico de gallo, jalapeño peppers and fresh home-made guacamole
$12

Like everything in life, needs more guac. Otherwise, come on, they’re nachos. Yum! :)

03

PICO DE GALLO
tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, finely chopped & marinated in fresh lime juice, salt & black pepper served with choice of: warm tortillas or corn chips
$7

The tortillas weren’t warm anymore when served, but that was fine. I originally wanted the guacamole but lost out to my dad who’s a big fan of pico de gallo. I enjoyed this! These two appetizers and my drink made me pretty full before we even got to our main dishes.

05

AMIGOS MIXED PLATTER FOR 1
mini chicken burrito, mini cheese quesadilla, two beef tacos served with two of the following sides: Mexican rice, refried beans (black or pinto), house salad or sautéed veggies
$18

This is a really good idea to offer as a main dish for one person. The burritos and taco could use a lot more stuffing, especially meat, but all of the main dishes ended up being quite filling for us anyway after all those appetizers.

06

TACOS (GROUND BEEF)
three crispy or soft corn tortillas stuffed with your choice of meat or veggies, topped with lettuce, pico de gallo and cheese; served with two of the following sides: Mexican rice, refried beans (black or pinto), house salad or sautéed veggies
$13

07

CHILES RELLENOS
pair of mexican poblano peppers, stuffed with cheese, topped with a tomato sauce, avocado and pico de gallo served with two of the following sides: Mexican rice, refried beans (black or pinto), house salad or sautéed veggies
$13

It was my first time trying this, and it was delicious! The cheese stuffed in the peppers wasn’t melted though, which I think I would have enjoyed a lot more. It’s such a heavy dish and I ended up having to pack up more than half of it for home.

08

FAJITAS (ANGUIS STRIP LOIN STEAK)
hot, fresh off the grill served on a sizzling skillet on a bed of peppers & sautéed onions served with Mexican rice, beans (black or pinto), cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo and warm flour tortillas
$18

09

TRES LECHES CAKE
condensed milk, evaporated milk, regular milk mixed with Kahlua & a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream & chocolate syrup
$8

SO GOOD, and so decadent! My first time trying this and I liked how moist and rich it was.

10

FRIED ICE CREAM
two scoops of ice cream breaded with corn flakes, briefly deep-fried making a warm, crispy shell covering the still cold ice cream topped with whipped cream & chocolate syrup
$7

My brother really enjoyed this dish. I have to say those are the most perfectly round deep-fried ice cream scoops I’ve ever encountered. My friend, Karen, also happens to love this dessert here.

11

CHURROS
known as the “Spanish doughnut”, dough pastry rolled in sugar and cinnamon
$7

My brother is a churros FIEND, and while the portion is a little small for its price, it was satisfying enough.

12

FRIED PLANTAINS WITH ICE CREAM
sweet plantains, fried to a golden brown with vanilla ice cream, whipped
cream, chocolate syrup & topped with a cherry
$7

My dad really enjoyed this dessert, and I think it’s the most well-presented. Despite us all being pretty stuffed from dinner, we all managed to (mostly) clean up these desserts. The only other dessert on the menu that we didn’t order is the flan, which I guess we’ll have to try next time!
